When we move past the curtain of white
we see black, blue, purple people.
And to see the face shining out,
knowing that nothing but skin is enfolding it,
helps me to see that each person is hidden behind a shift of skin
that is there temporarily, a protection for the sun, something to hold
all our thoughts in, and that skin has mysteries and stories to tell,
yet, it is one glass through which we see darkly.

Nobody is More Important than Anybody Else

Nobody is more important than anybody else.
No matter what the race is
we're always as good as our neighbors.
The president was even an ordinary person at one point.
We are all like one speck of dust in a large bowl
and if you tried to find yourself in the middle, you wouldn't have any luck.
If you thought of yourself as a needle in a haystack
you would be very hard to find.

It's a Dove

There's a dove on my windowsill.
It goes coo-coo.
My screen door is closed
but my regular door is opened.
I hear the dove and its beautiful sound.
And now the dove flies away.
She comes back tomorrow--
I put out bread for her
and I watch her every day.
Finally one day
she's gone for a while.
Then suddenly the next morning
I see her nest of eggs.
Now I go outside
and one hatches.
The dove is still there.
I leave bread out for all of them.

Dewdrops

Dewdrops, dewdrops, dewdrops
on my window. Dewdrops falling
from my gutter. Dewdrops on the grass.
Dewdrops on the flowers. Dewdrops on the trees
and the fallen leaves. Dewdrops everywhere.

It rained last night,
and I saw dewdrops on my window.
Dewdrops, dewdrops, dewdrops.
Oh, dewdrops.
When will you stop?

Oh, dewdrops, oh dewdrops, oh dewdrops.
Dewdrops on animals, dewdrops on everything.
I love dewdrops, but I don't want them to be wet.
Dewdrops, dewdrops, dewdrops,
dewdrops, dewdrops, dewdrops.
Oh, dewdrops when will you stop.
Dewdrops, oh, dewdrops.

How Everything Works

Sunlight brightens up the world--
it brightens up the whole universe.
And the moon--
it lets us have night.
The entire universe. The night in the sky.
The moon, white, gives us night.
The animals start falling asleep.
The humans fall asleep.
Even the flowers fall asleep.
Saturn does nothing,
Jupiter does nothing, Pluto
does nothing. The rest of the planets
do nothing either.
And the earth
does A LOT!
It helps us live
and the moon, the sun, the earth,
those are the only planets
that do anything.

I'm Scared

One day I was walking very fast
and I saw a glimpse and it was a shape of a dog
but I looked and it wasn't a dog.
I saw two coyotes chasing me and I was scared.
I ran and ran and ran, still I ran some more.
And I came to my steps and my Mom looked like she was saying,
"What in the world?" And I say, "Mommy Mommy,"
And she says, "What are you talking about?
Honey and Leroy are on vacation,
and we are on vacation, too!"
I'm like, "There are two coyotes chasing after me!"
My mom squints her eyes and she says,
"Come back inside! I do not want one coyote
chasing after you, I mean two coyotes."
And I come inside.
